RIN: What is it?
If you are in the Province of Ontario and are looking to register a company vehicle(s) with the Ministry of Transportation, you would need a RIN (Registrant Identification Number). It is a 9-digit number assigned to a company vehicle; the registration can be done through Service Ontario.
Why is a RIN Number Required for Company Vehicles?
Legally speaking, all vehicles that are going to be driven on roads in Ontario need to be registered with the Ministry of Transportation (MTO). MTO assigns a unique identification number to every vehicle that is registered. One of the requirements when registering a vehicle is to show proof of driver’s license.
The issue here for businesses is that the business itself does not have a driver’s license, therefore the RIN (Registrant Identification Number) system was implemented for that reason. The RIN is proof that a company has registered its vehicle(s) in its name.
If you need to register a RIN with the MTO (via Service Ontario), a RIN letter is required. The RIN letter confirms that the business owners or directors provide their legal consent authorizing the process of obtaining the RIN. Service Ontario requires the letter to be sworn before a commissioner of oaths or a notary public.
What Type of Businesses Can Register a RIN?
Whether it is a sole proprietorship, partnership, or a corporation, all are entitled to register a RIN with the Ministry of Transportation in Ontario.
What do I need to Register a RIN?
When registering a RIN, you need to visit Service Ontario and provide them with the following:
· one identification document for the business, such as, articles of incorporation or amendment, or a letter of good standing
· two documents that show proof of business address (e.g., a copy of a utility bill or insurance pink slip)
· a Notarized RIN Letter of Authorization
